2018 STMHS Senior Celebration Scholarship Winners!

On June 14th we recognized our graduating seniors with praise, scholarships and pride as 98% of our graduates are heading to a two or four year college/university and 2% are joining the military.

Scholarships awarded included:
Founders Award
The Founder’s Award is given in honor of Lou Allen, founder of the Science and Technology Magnet High School. As founder, he had the foresight, determination, and perseverance to bring to fruition the 1st STEM high school in Southeastern CT. The recipient is an individual who has a robust work ethic, a strong desire to give back to their community, is supportive of others, creative, and has overcome obstacles. This individual is pursuing a career in a STEM related field and is attending an accredited 2 or 4 year degree program or certification program.
Recipient: JUNIE DULCICE

Margaret O’Shea Scholarship
This award is given annually to the STMHS student who has overcome numerous hardships in life, but who has maintained a focus on academic excellence in spite of these obstacles.  Given in honor of Margaret O’Shea, whose knowledge of curriculum and instruction has influenced the STMHS academic program.

Alumni Award
This award is given annually to an STMHS student who proves to be a leader amongst their peers and exhibits a passionate will to give back to the New London community and help in its growth and improvement. Given on behalf of the STMHS alumni Association, which serves as an integration and networking resource for alumni, and a partner of the school and greater community.
Recipient: VICTORIA VASQUEZ

Timpano Family Award
This award is given by the Timpano Family to a student  to graduating high school senior that has overcome learning difficulties who will be enrolled in a two-year community college or four year college. He or she articulates challenges and recognizes the need for self-advocacy; is committed to post-high school academic study/career training and has begun to set realistic career goals; has demonstrated perseverance and is committed to achieving personal goals; and participates in school and community activities.

 Barbara Major Award/Tommie Major Award
The Barbara Major Scholarship and Tommie Major Award are given in memory of Barbara Major and her commitment to the student athletes of New London Public Schools. These individuals are in good academic standing and going to college to major in a STEM related field.

 John Mahon Award
This award  is given annually to the STMHS student who overcame their fear of public speaking to give an outstanding Senior Capstone presentation. Given in the memory of Capt. John B. Mahon, a long time advisory board member with a passion for public speaking. Capt. Mahon gave his time and expertise to help students polish and deliver superior presentations.

Valerie Tamano Award
Given annually to the student who has enthusiastically excelled at meeting intellectual and social challenges, while exhibiting a strong penchant for community learning coupled with Whaler Pride.  This award is given on behalf of Valerie Tamano, a New London High School alumni, who is well known for her devotion to the students and staff of the New London Public Schools.
Recipient: AMIR BUTCHER

 Laurelle Texidor Award
Given annually to a student who, through unrelenting perseverance and resilience, has achieved the goals that he or she established , leading to an academic and social profile of distinction.  Given in honor of Laurelle Texidor, and STMHS devotee and supporter since its inception.
Recipient: SOPHIA MURPHY

Richard Uguccioni Scholarship
Given annually by the Uguccioni family in memory of their late father, Richard Uguccioni . He was a well-known civic leader who was instrumental in the creation of the STMHS.  The recipient displays the attributes of community service and the pursuit of knowledge.
Recipient: NOAH SMITH

Dime Bank Award
This award is given  in by the employees of the Dime Bank to a student committed to community and furthering their education
.

STMHS Faculty Scholarship
Given annually by the STMHS faculty to a student who has, in a quiet and unassuming manner, contributed to the overall success of the school.

Joseph N. Sachatello, III Memorial Award

Joe Sachatello, a police officer with the Montville Police Department from August 2000 - January 2003, performed his duties with enthusiasm and a passion for helping people.  The recipient of this scholarship demonstrates these same qualities, as well as serving in a  formal leadership role in our school.   He or she is a community minded individual who is very motivated and responsible and puts in time above and beyond what is expected.

 P. BERTRAND PHILLIPS & JUDITH V. PHILLIPS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
This award  is given to a graduating senior of the Science and Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut (STMHS) for outstanding overall performance in high school. This student has a bright and inquiring mind with strong academics as well as community service and leadership and has a financial need. This person has integrity, is culturally competent, a good citizen, possesses good work ethic, is well organized, cheerful, and poised.
Recipient: MAKEEDA BANDELE-ASANTE

 Copperwood Grill Award
This award  is given to a student who is in good academic standing  and has a strong desire to further their education.
Recipients: EMMA HURLEY AND NATE BLAND

 Director’s Award
This award is given to a Student who is chosen by the Director, who fully braced the opportunities offered to all students at STMHS, and has gone above and beyond our already high expectations in meeting these rigorous challenges.
