Science & Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut has been named a National Magnet School of Excellence by Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools.

In its thirteenth year, the Science and Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut (STMHS) became a Certified National Magnet School in the fall of 2018. With students from New London and 29 regional towns - including 103 who started their commitment to STEM at the elementary level at Winthrop STEM and continued through the STEM Magnet Middle School. As a diverse, Title I school, students experience instruction through project-based learning, the engineering design process and the development of vital 21st Century Skills (The 4 C’s) of Collaboration, Creativity, Communication and Critical Thinking. Amongst others, rigorous coursework in biomedical sciences, sports medicine, and engineering provide solid foundations for education beyond high school and/or entry into early career opportunities. The Five MSA Pillars [1) diversity 2) innovative curriculum, 3) academic excellence, 4) high quality instruction and 5) family and community partnerships] guide STMHS’s on-going efforts to improve and enhance its programming and instruction. STMHS alums are committed to “giving-back” and several have established scholarships to support students who follow them.

Director, Laurelle Texidor states. “I must credit this marvelous accomplishment to our staff and parents who work diligently to support and challenge students to perform at their highest potential, regardless of their current levels. We are very pleased.”

Laurelle Texidor, Director, will be recognized and receive a National Magnet School of Excellence Merit Award on behalf of the school during an awards ceremony held at Magnet Schools of America’s 37th National Conference hosted by Baltimore County Public Schools in Baltimore, Maryland April 10-13, 2019.

Magnet School of Excellence Awards are only given to a select group of magnet schools. To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme.
