Aiming Higher. Achieving More!

Students stood proud and parents beamed as ninth graders in New London’s Early College Opportunity (NL ECO) program, received their summer paychecks and registered as students in Three Rivers Community College (TRCC). These are definite perks of NL ECO, the newest offering at Science & Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut (STMHS), whose mission is to prepare students to succeed in STEM-related careers. NL ECO program is designed so that students are not only high school students, but they are also students at TRCC. They will have a unique opportunity to earn an industry-recognized associates degree from Three Rivers Community College (in mechanical engineering technology or advance manufacturing with a concentration in sheet metal fabrication) along with their high school diploma within a four to six year period of time. Along with TRCC, partners in this enterprise include General Dynamics Electric Boat (EB), the Eastern Advanced Manufacturing Alliance (EAMA), Three Rivers Community College (TRCC) and New London High School. Providing industry mentors for each student is also an important component. Students recently met with their assigned mentors from EB and other manufacturing companies that make up EAMA and participated in a number of relationship-building activities. Students and their mentors will communicate regularly and develop meaningful connections during this multi-year commitment. Be sure to keep an eye out for more updates to come!
